Great Espresso and Solving the Clog Problem by Dr. Z
For over a year I have been making my daily Americano on my Krups XP4030, and enjoying it. I have two complaints, one is that the steam wand pops off at really bad times, like when I’m using it. It’s not a big deal for me, I don’t use it often. The other complaint is the portafilter, that stainless steel cup holding the coffee grounds. I use the 2-cup filter, and it clogs very easily. As a result, I can’t grind my coffee beans as finely as I would like. A finer grind clogs the portafilter on the very first run.

Every other month, however, regardless of the grind, that portafilter clogs up, no espresso comes out and the machine just growls away. And there I am, with a sewing needle, poking out each tiny, microscopic hole, with no Americano, and a big mess in the kitchen. I ordered a second portafilter and now I have two clogged portafilters. Then, a solution hit me.

I went to the grocery store and purchased a box of Melita Coffee Filters. Using a pair of scissors, I cut out a few circles sized to fit in the bottom of the portafilter. I wet the paper, placed it inside. I ran hot water through the paper to remove as many of the residual chemicals from it. Then I put my most finely-ground coffee in it and it works like a charm. No clogs, and I get my 18-second pull just fine. Also, as an added bonus, when I knock out the old grounds from the portafilter, the filter paper stays with the it, and I reuse it over and over. In the past month, since I’ve been using this system, I’ve used 2 filter paper circles.

When my first portafilter clogged irrerparably, I looked to replace the Krups. I sure didn’t like the choices out there. The reviews I read led me back to the Krups each time. So, I developed this workaround, and now I can awaken confident that my Americano is only an espresso pull away.

Now, if they can only keep the silly steam wand from popping off…. Maybe duct tape…hmmmm….I’ll be right back! Home Depot, here I come!

Krups espresso machine - 15 bars! by Rich B
excellent espresso, excellent cappucino. easy to clean, easy to operate, makes some neat pumping noises and the steam noise is very nice too.

Did I mention that the espresso tastes great? with wonderful crema on top? I actually like this espresso better than the espresso I had in Rome this past April.

definitely an excellent purchase!

poor seal design, otherwise good. by David C. Bainbridge
had this unit only a year before the seal gave way. Anytime the seal/water got too hot water would hiss and spray everywhere when making espresso. Too bad, for this is an otherwise perfect machine.

Not as good as expected by Y. Gan
When the coffee maker first arrived, it worked great. Just in a month it start to have problem. The water tank doesn’t function as it supposed to. I have to apply pressure to make it work. I am thinking about sending it to the repair center.
